with regard to ‘must haves’ i have noticed one boat with a pull out ironing board, that set me thinking -you wouldnt want an ironing board crashing onto you as you walk along your boat, anyone built a narrow tall cupboard to fit one in, or are there lots of people with fold out/down ones, if you do your own washing then you must need one? are there any other custom made cupboards that should be built in if poss? margaret

We don’t have an ironing board. Sally uses the back of a full length mirror in a frame to iron her clothes. I try not to iron at all. Before Sally and I met, I only bought good quality clothes which didn’t crease. Just washing them and hanging them up was enough. Unfortunately, Sally has tried to “civilise” me by buying me posh clothes. They need ironing so we have an agreement. If she wants me to wear them, she irons them.

When you’re considering your ironing board you should think more about the iron itself rather than the board. Are you going to be static and attached to a land line or are you going to be a continuous cruiser. If you are going to spend a lot of time cruising, how are you going to supply a power hungry appliance such as an iron? You’ll need to make sure that you have an inverter which will be able to handle the appliance and any other power hungry appliances (hair dryer, toaster, kettle, washing machine etc).

Surely an ironing board isn’t a must have. It’s a devise that creates un-necessary work for someone using another device that wastes the valuable energy you pay a fortune to produce on a boat.

Put your clothes on 30 minutes before you go out, the heat of your body will decrease them sufficiently, no one will even notice and even if they did, they wouldn’t bother to say anything. Life’s too short, if you’re going to live on a boat, do just that, “Live” and don’t be a slave to consumerism.

As you might guess we don’t Iron clothes Smile

When in bricks and mortar, I used to iron everything, since being on the boat, I can honestly say, I have not ironed one thing.  I do not have an iron or ironing board on the boat.

Now, When Jim needs a shirt ironing, I will have the dilemma of, do I get a small iron (and use table top) or use the iron and board that is available in the marina wash room.

I currently use the dryers (my own washing machine but marina dryers) to dry washing and hang straight up but once out cruising – I don’t want to waste my time ironing with all that lovely big world out there so I think I will go for the creased bohemian look.Laugh

Jeannette is ironing on the table as I write, using a heatproof cover sold by the metre at Birmingham Market. It helps that we use a generator.

Looking back over  the forum, I came across this thread about ironing boards.  I wrote that I didnt own an iron or a board.  Jim got a temporary project a short time ago which meant that he had to wear shirts.  So I invested in a little table top board and a cheap iron.   I shall be glad when his project finishes because whilst the little table top hides away nicely behind the cupboard, its a pain in the neck trying to successfully iron a shirt on a wobbly little board. I only have to do one at a time so I just grit the teeth, get it done and put away.  I still dont iron anything else.  (might have a little table top ironing board for sale shortly )   ;))Laugh

Very impressive. Is that your boat? Which canal is that?

At Mercia Marina facilities they have a table for people to put stuff they don’t require – the ironing board on our boat was left there, as was the microwave and the steamer. I have missed the microwave a couple of times, but not the steamer, and the ironing board was totally redundant! The beautifully made cupboard it was housed in now contains the broom and squeegee mop.

Cheers, Marilyn
