Meet Our Sponsors
Founded in 2003, we are proud to say that Carefree Cruising is the oldest and longest established of the major shared ownership narrowboat schemes. We now have 15 shared ownership narrowboats under management. Our experience and approach set us out as being a cut above the rest.
Artie & Ruth Chalmers were boaters for many years before they founded Carefree Cruising. Today, their love of boating continues as proud owners of a share in one of the Carefree Cruising managed syndicates. Their experience as boaters, customers and managers of our scheme has enabled us to develop a market leading share boat offering that is second to none.
Our very first share boat was “bought in”, a high specification boat from a very reputable boat builder. However, disillusion soon set in when it became obvious that, despite its high price tag and “quality” builder, the boat was not fit for purpose. Following this experience, Artie & Ruth founded Elton Moss Boatbuilders, and ever since we have built our own boats, using only the finest materials and fully time served craftsmen.
Our management service is equally impressive. We operate a structured, fair, even handed and impartial boat usage system for our share owners, with each owner picking their weeks by way of a list that rotates each year. Our administration is delivered in an efficient and friendly manner, and owners are involved in the decision making for their boat at all times.
We directly manage the turnaround of, and repairs to, the boats at each of our three main cruising bases, which are located at Sandbach (Trent & Mersey Canal), Welton (Grand Union Leicester Line) and Aston (Trent & Mersey Canal). We operate an internet based share owner communication and information system for the benefit of all our members and each syndicate has their own dedicated client bank account, meaning that members money is 100% safe at all times.

rs & the Northwich Boat Company
Artie & Ruth Chalmers established the Carefree Cruising shared ownership narrowboat scheme in 2002. Their very first share boat was “bought in”, a high specification boat from a very reputable boat builder. However, it soon became obvious that, despite its high price tag and “quality” reputable boat builder, this boat was not fit for purpose.
Following this experience, Artie & Ruth founded Elton Moss Boatbuilders in 2003, and ever since then all Carefree Cruising share boats have been built by Elton Moss, using only the finest materials and fully time served craftsmen.
Carefree Cruising’s share boats have a usage of over seven times that of the average sole owner boat. Elton Moss Boatbuilders therefore build in durability and reliability as standard, whether the boat is for shared ownership or sole owner use. Elton Moss produce high specification “standard” boats and also build to individual customer’s bespoke specifications.
In 2005, an opportunity was seen to challenge the budget boat producers, many of whom’s quality was questionable. “The Northwich Boat Company” brand was launched, specializing in standard layout fully fitted boats, produced in volume but with the same inherent quality as an Elton Moss boat.
In 2007 a shortage of experienced skilled staff in the UK coincided with the decision of one of our most skilled employees that now was the time to return home to his native Czech Republic. Ivo Vyskocil convinced Artie that with the ready availability of fully time served traditional craftsmen, an admirable work ethic, and good transport links, it would make commercial sense to produce high quality boats in the Czech Republic to meet demand from the UK and Europe. This proved to be a good decision and so far approximately 80 boats have been build in our Czech factory.
To date approximately 220 boats have been buit; 60 “Eltons” and 160 “Northwiches”.
Established in 2002, Boatfinder Brokerage Services provide a friendly and professional service for boat sellers and buyers alike. The original “video broker”, we specialise in the sale of all styles of new and used narrow and wide beam canal craft. Our marketing package, which includes a studio quality DVD video boat tour, a detailed, full colour 8 page colour brochure, a fully detailed listing on our popular website, www.boatfinderbrokerage.co.uk, and a comprehensive “potential buyer contact details” database which we use to notify potential buyers of newly listed boats, is second to none.
We are equally good at selling boats from the home moorings (or even when they are out cruising the network) or in conjunction with our partner quality marina operators located in Essex, Cheshire and Lancashire, for those who prefer to sell their boats from “traditional” brokerage moorings.
Our studio quality DVD video boat tours and professionally produced 8 page colour brochures (which include layouts and dimensions) enable prospective purchasers to make a “virtual” viewing shortlist of suitable boats from the comfort of their own armchair! “Physical” viewings are then arranged with boat owners or marina staff.
Offers and negotiation between buyer and sellers are handled by our experienced and enthusiastic staff who operate seven days a week. We look
after all the formal paperwork and “hold your hand” through the sales or purchase process.
We also have a specialist new boat sales team, and have considerable experience of selling new and used boats as permanent liveaboards.
For peace of mind, all monies are kept secure in a separate client bank account and we are members of the British Marine Federation and The Boat Retailer sand Brokers Association.
