Hello,

Nice forum, thanks Paul.

We, (my wife Sal and I) have had an interest in canals & narrowboats, mainly through walking the towpaths and being around them, for a long time now, so it's only logicial that we eventually want to spending some time afloat.

I've retired, but we're still tied to five weeks holiday a year due to Sally still working, so the plan now is to try and buy into a 'share-boat syndicate, and thats what we're looking into at the moment.

We'll give that two or three years, and who knows, perhaps then (when Sally retires and no.2 son is finally off our hands) we may get to the next stage, of our own boat, and continually cruise for six to eight months a year, and then, who knows…..but one step at a time eh!

Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. John Lennon

cheers John

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum. Dare I ask where the "Bottletop" user name came from?

How far down the line are you with your boat share? Have you decided on one yet? Private or company? Please share your experience. I'm sure that there are many visitors to the site who would like to know more.

Incidentaly, you've missed an option from your list. You could follow the example of graphic designer Mike Barrett. He leaves his working wife at home while he cruises the network on his narrowboat Blue Moon. Do you think Sal would be OK with that?

Ah!…Bottletop   I wish there was a funny or humourious story to tell you, such as  "I had a vision that a man came unto us on a flaming pie, and he said, 'You are Beatles with an A.' And so we were."  but no, it was just that I needed a forum name quickly a few years ago and that was the first word that was accepted after quite a number of ever more oddities were offered…..sorry.

Regarding the boat share project. we've looked at quite a few over the summer, and we 'think' we know what we want, but it's a matter of 'we'll know it when we see it' sort of thing. No doubt it'll be a compromise though as there are so many variables, week rota system/stern type/layout/managed or private syndicate etc etc. but I thing we're narrowing it down.

Had a look at Mike Barrett & Blue Moon….."I wanted to find a creative space." I'll text that to Sally from up on the Leeds & Liverpool if I never want to see home or family again…… but seriously, it would be wonderful to be doing what you love for a living, doing it where you love to be, and with those you love. ……..If only eh!

cheers John

It starts with a dream, the dream needs a plan, and the plan begins with a boatshare…
